Arlington, Virginia, USA

The setting sun sending long shadows, across the fallen snow, from the headstones in Arlington Cemetery. The muffling effect of the snow emphasising the reverential atmosphere of the National Cemetery where even the graves of the unknown are treated with respect.

I seem to be drawn to stairwells. The curving lines of the stairs and banister rails and straight lines of the steps, shadows and window contrast strongly and emphasise each other.

At the end of Memorial Bridge stands the Lincoln Memorial, its Greek Revival architecture reminiscent of Greek temples in ages past, with a portico supported by massive Doric pillars. The statue of Lincoln gazes out down the Reflecting Pool to the WWII Memorial and Washington Memorial with the dome of the Capitol visible on the horizon.

Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, USA.

As far as the eye can see, row on row, precisely placed, white headstones with names of the fallen. There is such peace here amongst the graves, peace only shattered by the occasional volley of rifle fire and lonely sound of a bugle drifting with the wind to marking the passing of another.

Just outside Arlington National Cemetery stands the Marine Corps Memorial, with bronze figures 32ft tall. The statue was based on the photo taken at Iwo Jima of the raising of the US flag above the beaches by Marines. We walked across the Key Bridge to Georgetown today crossing the Potomac and then the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal that runs parallel to the river. The sun was shining brightly belying the bitter cold wind that was blowing, freezing everything.

Potomac River from Key Bridge, between Rosslyn VA, and Georgetown, DC, USA

Icy wind blowing down the river, freezing all in it's path. The Potomac River was covered in ice with a blanket of snow, from the Virginia shoreline to Georgetown. Small breaks in the ice showed the grey water with little wind-created ripples that lapped at the ice edges.

Smithville, Missouri, USA

There has been a stillness in the air today with not a sound to disturb the peace. The setting sun turned the sky into a blend of the most delicate shades of blue and pink and apricot over the pristine landscape of frozen snow. As the sun sets the shadowed snow turns blue, at the horizon the sky has turned a delicate shell pink, thin clouds are delicate apricot against the palest of blue.

I love the sound of footsteps crunching through freshly fallen snow, like the sound of a bite into a crisp apple, leaving a shadowy trail across a virgin landscape. The powdery snow puffed into the air and sparkles with each step. The sun was shining brightly today from a pale blue sky, reflections off the snow were blinding, the air bitterly cold.

Smithville, Missouri, USA

Woke this morning to more snow falling gently, covering the tracks made yesterday. By early afternoon the sun was shining and the snow was sparkling brightly. Occasional gusts of wind blew the snow off the roof, looking like a little shower of diamonds in the air. The shadows cast are deep blue contrasting starkly with the pristine whiteness. The world seems to have been quietened by the snow, like a dampener has been placed over the countryside.

Dried flower heads against snow, Smithville, Missouri, USA

A bleak and cold day with temperatures well below freezing. Sullen, grey clouds turning the landscape monochrome, the frozen snow brilliant white against a steely sky.
Today's photo of dried flower heads reminded me of snowflakes. I've always loved black and white photography and using monochrome today seemed a good representation of the way the day felt.

New Year's Day, Smithville, Missouri, USA

Woke up early to greet an icy, icy New Year's Day with temperatures of -15 degrees Centigrade (5 degrees Fahrenheit). The sun was just tinting the horizon in the East and the Blue Moon of 31st December, 2009 was setting in the West. I couldn't resist going out to capture the new dawn even though I was barefoot and there is still deep snow around the house. I was torn as to which photo to post as my first - the setting moon or the rising sun but as the first day of the year and the promises of new beginnings I had to go with the rising sun.
